La Perla: Hidden treasure

For the last fifty years, La Perla has been a community forgotten in time. Lots of prejudice against this community has been accepted through out the years. It is time to stand and support the people from La Perla. If they fail, is because we have failed to support and protect them against the hate and fear from our fellow citizens. Last but not least, is not that all of them are good citizens, but are we good citizens too? Located in the northern part of the islet of San Juan, the community of La Perla, ran from the Atlantic Ocean and the walled city of Old San Juan. The establishment of this community, outside the path of the municipality of San Juan, responds to the historical development of the defense system of the city. This community inherits its name from the old fort called La Perla in the eighteenth century was built outside the wall system to provide protection to the Castillo San Felipe del Morro and San Cristobal.
The developer of this community process began with the location of the cemetery and the slaughterhouse adjacent to Fort La Perla. It was in the nineteenth century that the first families settled in the area. The community composition was formed by the spontaneous construction of homes by residents without prior organization.
